Pets and the TV set

When I was a child my mother always told me that sitting too close to the television set would ruin my eyesight. I wonder if that philosophy holds true for dogs?
For obvious reasons, Darin and I like to watch programs on the Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. Often times Archie, Frankie and Cody join us in the living room for a little viewing pleasure of their own. I can honestly say that I’m more entertained watching them watch TV, especially if the program features animals of any type. And if we tune into the “Dog Whisperer,” we can guarantee the show has their full attention. I’ve witnessed them barking along with other dogs on the screen, going behind the set in hopes of finding where their new friends are hiding and just being generally engrossed with the action.
My girls actually think these on-camera canines are right in the room with them! I can dangle a chew toy, a treat, or any other object in their faces, but my attempts for their attention just can’t compete with the lure of pet programming.
So let me pass on some words of advice to my fellow dog owners: If you’re looking for a good laugh, snuggle up on the couch with your pupster the next time you watch a National Geographic special. They’ll enjoy it as much as you will….and it won’t ruin their eyesight.
